Travelling with your kids – How to Make yourTravelling a Fun Experience?

Remember how your parents would take you on holiday, and you found yourself going somewhere with them. You certainly had fun, but you as a child were probably not part of the decision-making process.

You’re a parent now, and you have options to make your kids part of the decision when it comes to where to take your next vacation.

Get opinions

If you have holiday time coming up and you still haven’t decided, get your children in on it. Ask each of them to write down what they might like to do or where to go, and what they liked (or didn’t like!) about their last holiday. This can be especially interesting if there is more than one child—it could make for some lively discussion! Ask them what they want to get out of their next holiday, as well.

Tasks

When you have all agreed and have booked your tickets (and checked that passports are in order, and have the appropriate insurance) don’t just leave it at that. Involve your kids in some kinds of projects that have to do with your destination. Younger children particularly may enjoy learning how to find this place on a map, or drawing and coloring in their own map of the country. Encourage them to find pictures in books and magazines, even pictures they can cut out and put into a booklet of their own.

If you are going to a country where a foreign language is spoken it might be an idea to have them learn some words or expressions in that language, even if it is only the alphabet and a few numbers. Older children can probably learn some basic conversation, as well as some of the history of the place.

Discomforts

On long trips children tend to get bored and anxious, so have some activities ready that will take their minds off the time, such as puzzles,  compact discs, books for coloring or reading, or any kind of games or toys.

And finally, foreign food can prove challenging, especially for younger children. So while encouraging them to sample the local fare, have a supply of their favorites just in case there are problems!
